The term “VibroAcoustic Therapy” was first used by Olav Skille, a Norwegian educator and therapist to describe the use of low frequency sound applied as a tactile experience for the treatment of physical and psychological conditions. In other words, “vibro” means to vibrate, and “acoustic” means to hear. VibroAcoustic Therapy allows your body to feel what the music sounds like through, in our case, a specially designed massage table created to emit low frequency sound waves. VibroAcoustic Therapy offers the body an internal massage, right down to the cellular level. This therapy has been in use since the early 1980’s and is used as a medical intervention as well as for therapeutic relaxation and stress release.

Since recorded history, low frequency sound has been used in various forms to create physiologic and psychological effects. From the chanting of Tibetan Monks and Gregorian chants to the music of African tribes and Australian aborigines, low frequency sound has been used to calm, to excite, to induce relaxation, to relieve anxiety and even motivate warriors.
VibroAcoustics is a scientific method of applying low frequency stimulation to the human body to obtain desired emotional or physical effects. Each part of the human nervous system and muscle groups vibrate to a unique frequency. VibroAcoustics combines these resonance frequencies in computer generated programs. These sessions use sinusoidal sound (‘sine’) waves because of the purity of their sound. These pure frequencies are found in the resonances of cell membranes and intracellular microtubules. Cell vibration actually makes cells work (like jogging!), as well as giving them periods of relaxation. Controlled scientific studies have demonstrated statistically significant decreases in anxiety, tension, muscle spasticy and dramatic increases in relaxation and sense of well being. Psychological testing shows that people who receive this type of therapy generally feel more well.
Physical conditions that responded well to this treatment included neck and shoulder pain, lumbago, menstrual pain, and chronic back pain. Depressive symptoms and anxiety have also been improved using VibroAcoustic Therapy. Studies have shown positive improvements in high blood pressure, pulse rates, and muscle tension, as well as the perception of improvements in motivation and subjective feelings of health and well-being.
Additional research has shown this therapy has applications to help reduce symptoms for chemotherapy patients, increase ROM (range of motion) and muscle tone in physical therapy or rehabilitative therapy following knee replacement, help prepare patients for surgery or those who are recovering and even provide sensory stimulation for people who are hearing impaired and developmentally disabled. VibroAcoustic therapy is wonderful for those who cannot exercise on their own. Acoustic cell vibration does not require any effort at all – it is purely receptive and does offer help with increased blood circulation and pain relief. Studies have also shown that this therapy helps cells to release built up toxins
How a VibroAcoustic Therapy session works
The client is ushered into a calming, relaxed environment and made comfortable on the sound bed. He or she is then bathed repeatedly with pure patterned and harmonious sinusoidal sound waves. These waves of varying frequency, pitch and tone wash throughout the body.
Muscle groups and other organs tingle with vibration in sympathetic harmony as their own resonance frequencies are approached. Ultimately, the effect is as though your entire body has been massaged, right down to each cell. The experience is extremely relaxing as muscle tissue loses tension, blood flow is improved and pain is eased. A client should take the therapy at least twice a week during their first three months of physical, mental or emotional recovery. The main effect of this therapy is a harmonization of the parasympathetic nervous system.
There appears to be no significant adverse effects to this therapy, however for safety sake those who have heart conditions should talk to their doctor before having this therapy.
